Fashion apparel allows us expression of our personality, and uniqueness. However we are exhausting natural resources and creating unsustainable burdens on our world in the process. Sustainable and responsible consumption is the way forward. We have to find better ways to make what we use, and wisely use what we have. The Global Change Award is an important initiative to drive this forward. By intentionally and thoughtfully reusing, recycling, and repurposing, we can drive significant and radical improvements to our world. This is Change for ourselves and for the generations to come.
The expert panel
Meet the expert panel for Global Change Award 2018.
The H&M Foundation’s Global Change Award is a powerful catalyst to focus fashion’s brightest minds on decoupling the industry’s growth from its ever increasing use of resources. Game-changing innovation will be critical when applying circular economy principles at scale. The five winning entries will have a unique opportunity to help build a restorative and regenerative future for the fashion industry … It is a very exciting prospect!
Fashion and sustainability share a shifting paradigm. Technology and innovation are creating new possibilities for value. The H&M Foundation’s Global Change Award accelerates progress not only for its recipients but for our industry at large. By advancing material innovations such as orange fiber and grape skin leather, we create new opportunities for better design choices and move one step closer to processes that are safe for our planet and inspire new ways of wearing, making, and experiencing fashion with positive impact.
GCA is a decisive call to action, echoing a saying of Mahatma Gandhi almost a 100 years ago: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. GCA is the engine room that will facilitate this change by allowing all stakeholders to accelerate ‘eco-intentions’, cross-pollinate ideas, harness ground-breaking technology—all in a collective effort to move from a liner to circular economies. This is indeed a call for mindfulness in fashion.
For many brands, designers and suppliers, it’s a long journey to circular fashion. In order to build a new world where all products are designed and produced with safe materials, to be perpetually cycled, we must first look for the barriers of innovation. Our boldest creativity is born out of perceived limitations. We humans are called to solve problems elegantly – just as nature does. The Global Change Awards calls for many untapped innovators to connect with a pathway for circularity in the fashion industry.
We’re facing some big challenges. The way we consume resources will not be a viable option moving forward. Yet, within these challenges lie big business opportunities as humans strive to live and consume in a more sustainable way. New technology is the enabler. I believe entrepreneurs with bold creative ideas will change the world for the better. I’m looking forward to be part of the expert panel to help find entrepreneurs and innovations that can create real impactful change.
The Global Change Award welcomes the innovators of our time to introduce and expand the practices of the future. Calling on innovative solutions to create fresh, circular fashion models catalyzes the necessary, industry wide, shifts towards sustainable practices; it is the surest way to poise the fashion and textile industries as collective leaders evolving global, systemic and sustainable change. As an Earth Guardian and environmental justice activist, future generations are counting on us to change our business practices so we can insure them a healthy, just, sustainable planet.
It is such an honor to be part of H&M Foundation’s Global Change Award. Their vision coincides with my value that we need to come together in protecting our planet by contributing to sustainability. The event catalyzes green and ground-breaking ideas, that may eventually lead all of us to the possible solution for a truly sustainable fashion future.
We are changing our environment at an unprecedented and not positive pace. The Global Change Award, like the Nobel Prize, inspires great minds to discover and create sustainable solutions to this global challenge and in an industry where impact can be significant and immediate.
Enhancing resource efficiency in its supply chain will not only help the fashion industry mitigate the impacts of climate change, it will also be better for business, enhance brand value, and appeal to concerned youth who will be tomorrow’s leaders in protecting our planet.
